Restaurant Review: The Shack–Covington, LA
During a partial business trip to the New Orleans area a couple weeks ago, we came across some excellent food–again, as always, the New Orleans area does not disappoint foodies! While we did venture into New Orleans for a day, we did not actually spend too much time there. Instead, we spent most of the week on the Northshore in Covington, LA.
Besides the balmy 70 degree weather, palm trees and flowers in contrast to the still snowy and cold Maine, Covington proved to be an excellent spot for us to land! The food scene there is just as fabulous as New Orleans and the people are out-of-this-world friendly–plus, it’s not as expensive as staying in ‘the City’.
Over the next few posts, I’ll be featuring some of our favorite restaurants from the trip, and today I’m starting with The Shack.
Driving up to The Shack, you automatically are reminded of the days of small mom-and-pop, road-side diners–with a little bit of Louisiana flare added, of course! My other half and I went in about 1p on a weekday and were immediately greeted and seating by a very friendly server. We then took to analyzing the menu for our best options. I was in the mood for Salmon and selected the Sesame Salmon with Spinach and Grits– which was the fish of the day. My other half was feeling more adventurous for the day and took his first foray into the world of what he calls ‘fancy tacos’ with the Pork Tacos with Pineapple Slaw.
Did I mention our waitress was excellent and super friendly?? She was great!
When we got our food, both of us realized this was not just any ordinary diner… there was someone in the back with some serious food chops! Just look at these dishes!?!
Toasted Sesame Crusted Salmon at The Shack Restaurant
Besides looking amazing, they tasted incredible too! My toasted sesame crusted salmon was cooked perfectly, and the combination of the toasted sesame seeds, salmon, wonderfully prepared grits and some outstanding prepared spinach on top… every bite was balanced and delicious!
Pork Tacos with Pineapple Slaw at The Shack
My other half jumped into his Pork Tacos and immediately was impressed. The perfectly smoky pork balanced perfectly with the pineapple slaw was to.die.for…. We share everything, and I was a little jealous of the tacos–even though my salmon was outstanding in its own right!! The tortillas looked handmade, the pork was smoked and seasoned to perfection, the slaw was just the right balance of sweet. I’ve never had a better ‘fancy taco’, and we will be hard-pressed to find another to rival this one!
Overall, this experience was delicious, comfortable, welcoming, funky and all-around just great fun! If you make it to The Shack during the evenings, or during the summer, it also looks like they have an outdoor seating area that would be great to share with friends! We would highly recommend it and will be going back if we ever make it to the area again!
